Well Disinfection Mix 1 gallon of chlorine bleach to 4 gallons of water in a 5 gallon bucket. Pour mixture down your well. Run all spigots until you smell the bleach. If you test with a chlorine test strip it should turn dark purple if there is enough chlorine. If not, you need to add more chlorine. Shut the water off and leave the mixture in your well for at least 12 hours, overnight if possible to ensure proper disinfection. Do not use the water for drinking, cooking or bathing during the disinfection process. However, toilets can be flushed. After the minimum time has elapsed, run water through all spigots until bleach smell is no longer evident. If possible, use a hose to run the bleach water back into the well washing down the well casing thoroughly, then flush the water through the spigot until the bleach smell is gone. Chlorine test strips should not turn color if used at this time. If another sample comes back contaminated, please contact the Sanitarian’s Office for assistance. |
