Communicable Disease Surveillance

DCHD’s Communicable Disease program works to prevent the spread of disease in our community. DCHD partners with local healthcare providers so that diseases can be quickly identified, treated effectively, and further cases prevented. Communicable diseases include vaccine preventable diseases (measles, mumps chicken pox, flu etc.), vector-borne diseases (West Nile Virus, Zika, lyme disease, etc.), most food and water borne illnesses (e coli, salmonella, giardia, etc.), sexually transmitted diseases (chlamydia, gonorrhea, etc.), HIV, and Hepatitis A, B and C.

The Communicable Disease program also works closely with DCHD’s Immunization program to prevent disease and Family Planning for the testing and treatment of STDs. Communicable Disease program staff may also work with the Sanitarian to investigate instances of foodborne illness or possible rabies exposures. DCHD is required to report instances of certain communicable diseases to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. Communicable Disease staff investigate individual cases of these diseases, as well as outbreaks, in a confidential manner. They also monitor trends in occurrences of communicable diseases, locally and regionally, and provide local statistics to the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.
