- Pool Closure Policy

The Following items are considered critical items (more
likely than other items to cause serious injury and/or death) and are cause for immediate
closure of a pool under the state laws of Montana (either as a single item
or a multiple violation). Pool operators should self close a
facility that has any of these critical items existing until the problem is
corrected.

No Filtration (broken pump or other reasons)

No Sanitizer (out of sanitizer for whatever reason)

Low sanitizer (below 1.0 ppm chlorine or 2.2 ppm bromine)

Loose or unsecured main drain covers
-
Problems with gas chlorine storage, handling practices, or
other problems of and immediate nature related to the safe handling and/or
use of chlorine gas.

Clarity (must be able to see main drain from anywhere in or
around the pool; or equivalent standard(s) as listed in the Pool Rules: anything
less requires immediate closure)

Fecal accident
-
Adequate number of lifeguards (municipal pools only)

Pool or spa temperatures exceeds 104o F
-
Lighting adequate (see clarity standard above)
The following are reasons that a pool may be closed
by the County or State Health Departments.

pH out of compliance (should be between 7.2 - 7.8)

Guard line not in place at break between shallow and deep
ends (generally at 5' depth).

Personnel not currently trained in CPR on-site. Operator
should keep copy of all current certificates on file in office.

Required Safety Equipment:
-
Lifepole or shepherd crook (poolside)
-
Ringbouy or rescue tube (poolside)
-
Backboard with head restraints (readily available)
-
Alkalinity not within parameters (80 - 200 ppm)
