Dear 4-H'ers, leaders and parents,      
 

Fruit Delivery, March 28, MDU, 9:00 am The fruit truck is scheduled to be at the MDU building out near the fairgrounds on Friday, March 28 at 9:00 am. Please be there to help sort and pick up YOUR FRUIT! If you cannot get there in the morning, Sherry will be there until 4:30 pm and all fruit must be picked up by then. No fruit can leave the building until it is counted and the grapefruit and orange boxes checked for spoilage. Mixed boxes generally do not need to be checked, but you may want to look them over before you deliver them just in case there is some spoilage.

If we missed someone who sold over 30 boxes, please call Sherry. The top eight sellers get money from the Council plus five of the top sellers will get an extra $25 cash award from the fruit company. Everyone gets their $1 per $18 & $20 box and $2 per $25 and $1 for the cheese sticks after all the money is turned in from your club.

Money should be turned into your leader or the office as soon as possible. Don’t leave the fruit with your customers unless they have paid for it. Please get your fruit delivered within 5 days. All money should be turned into Sherry by April 8th, PLEASE! I need to pay the fruit company by that date. You cannot collect your prize money until all your money is in.

Thanks to everyone who sold fruit! We had a very good year, as we sold 85 more boxes than last year. We have 1740 boxes of fruit, beef sticks and cheese sticks to organize and sort, so please come and help on March 28 at the MDU building.

RECORD BOOK FORMS HAVE BEEN COMPUTERIZED Our 4-H record book forms have been computerized so that the 4-H members can type directly into them. The state office have updated the forms to create interactive fields. I have them on my email and will email them out to you this week so look for them in your email mail box. If I do not have your email address, you may not get them from me. Call if you are interested in this option. You need the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to work with these forms. The forms will be available on the MT 4-H website also.

4-H COUNCIL MEETING, APRIL 15 There will be a 4-H Council meeting, Tuesday, April 15 at 7:00 pm at the Courthouse Community Room. We need to talk about some fair book changes, showmanship day, contributing to the Senior All Nighter, reports from committees, help with the Miss Montana pageant June 10, and the 4-H food stand. All leaders are encouraged to attend this meeting as no policies will be changed during the fair. All policies need to be adopted at this meeting.

DEMONSTRATION & PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST, April 8

Demonstration and public speaking day will start in the evening on Tuesday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m. at the Courthouse Community Room. If you have a preference on time let us know when you call to register. Please register by April 4! Call us at 377-4277 with the title of your demo or talk and approximately how long it takes you. This will help us budget our time. We have moved the time to evening so the kids from out of town can participate.

WHAT IS A DEMONSTRATION? A demonstration usually has a finished product when the member finishes the presentation. It may be 3-4 minutes in length for the beginner and longer for the advanced demonstrator. There is no time limit, but it is hard to hold the audience's attention if they get too long. Contact the office for more information. We have new bulletins on demos and public speaking you may find helpful.

PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST Younger 4-H'ers from 8-10 years old will present a prepared speech from 3-5 minutes in length. Contestants 11 years old and older will present a prepared speech from 5 to 7 minutes in length. This speech is timed and a penalty of four points will be deducted for each minute over or under. Judges may question the participants at the conclusion of their prepared speech.

Remember that only those 4-H'ers 14 years of age or older need to do the impromptu speech. Immediately following giving the prepared speech, he or she will receive a topic to review for three minutes and them will give an impromptu speech for one and one half to three minutes in length. This speech is timed and a penalty of two points for each twenty seconds over or under will be deducted. All contestants will receive the same impromptu subject. In scoring, the prepared speech is worth 70% and the impromptu is worth 30%.

Farm Credit Services of Sidney is again sponsoring the speech contest. They offer prize money of $25, $15 and $10 to the first, second and third place competitors in the Junior and Senior division. The speeches can be on any subject, however you must call the office at 377-4277 to register by April 4!

STIR UPS CONTEST Again this year we will be trying to do a Stir Ups Contest. Members are asked to prepare a "main dish". They are asked to do all the preparation of the casserole at the contest site. This includes chopping, slicing, measuring, cooking and setting the table. Anyone interested is asked to call the office. The winner at Congress will win a trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, GA.

Ft Keogh Tours Spring group tours at the Ft Keogh Experiment Station in Miles City have been set for May 6-9, 2008. You need to let Diona Austill know by May 1 if you are interested in a tour. Her phone is 874-8219 and email is diana.austill@ars.usda.gov

Pig & Lamb Sales We have information here at the office on some upcoming pig and lamb sales. One is Saturday April 19 in Huntley Montana at the Y Knot Equestrian Center with the sale at 11:00 am and a selection clinic at 9:30 am. For more information call the Extension Office at 377-4277.

2008 OREO CAMP for 7 & 8 graders The 2008 4-H Oreo Camp will be held June 4, 5 & 6, 2008 at the St. Labre Mission in Ashland, Montana. It will begin the evening of the 4th and conclude early morning on the 6th. Activities planned at this time are shooting sports, a nutrition workshop and paintball. More information will be sent to 7 & 8 graders this week. The Oreo trip is designed for 4-H members who are currently enrolled in the 7th & 8th grades and are from Custer, Fallon, Carter, Dawson, Garfield, McCone, Prairie, Wibaux, Rosebud, Powder River and Treasure Counties. Registration is due by April 28 to Dawson County and by May 1 to Powder River County.

4-H CAMP NEEDMORE, JUNE 10 - 12, 2008 “Dive Into 4-H” is the theme for this year’s 4-H camp for 3rd through 6th graders for the 2007-08 school year. Special activities at this year’s camp will include repelling, crafts, dance, campfires, and lots of other activities. A registration form is included in this newsletter and is due back in the Extension Office by May 12th. You need to pay $65 unless you have 25 fruit credits which will allow you to attend free. If you want the tee shirt, that is an additional $11 or 6 fruit credits. Each county must have one adult counselor for each 10 campers. If your parents would like to go along to chaperone, please have them fill out an application. If we do not have enough chaperones, the kids will not be able to attend camp! Dawson County pays the chaperone fees. No late applications!

Fill out both sides of the registration form. We also need parents to furnish transportation to and from camp. If you can do that, please let us know. Applications due MAY 12.

2008 4-H Congress Montana State 4-H Congress will take place July 8 - 11 with the theme, “Find Your Element”. A great program is in store for 4-H members attending Congress this summer. There will be ten competitive events at Congress this year: Livestock Judging, Horse Judging, Stir-ups, Gavel Games, Quilt Contest,WHEP (Wildlife & Habitat Education Program) and a Horse Skill-a-Thon. Contest guidelines which include the purpose, rules, awards qualifications, and score sheets are available at the Dawson Extension Office. You must be 14 & older to attend. Applications can be picked up at the office and are due back June 1.

SHOOTING SPORTS TRAINING, SEPT 5-6, BAKER There will be a 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Training in Baker, Montana on September 5-6, 2008. More information will be coming later, however we thought we would let you know the dates now. Ruth Peck’s husband and Nadine Brown’s husband have expressed an interest in getting trained for the shooting sports project.
